Music:

Smells Funny by Hedvig Mollestad Trio

Released: February 1, 2019

HMT delivers a short LP that doesn’t hold punches, sending us a prog-rock letter in a jazz combo envelope while wonderfully blending infectious baseline grooves and creative solo structures. Each member is clearly talented but the way they mesh together is the real highlight. 8 out of 10

Tracks to Enjoy: “First Thing to Pop Is the Eye” & “Bewitched, Dwarfed and Defeated”

Feral Roots by Rival Sons

Released: January 25, 2019

What we have here is good ole’ fashion southern style rock n roll. Rival Sons have some pretty solid moments in instrumentation, specifically in their percussion and guitar work. Unfortunately, this is offset at times with generic riffs and lyrics that come together like a mad-lib of cliche rock sentiments. The titular track is absolutely brilliant but this album is severely unbalanced in terms of quality. 5.5 out of 10

What Chaos is Imaginary by Girlpool

Released: February 1, 2019

Damn, this is just a genuinely pleasant album. This LA-based duo gives you something a little bit different with every track which means most people will find something that they will enjoy over the course of this album. WCII ebbs and flows from distorted indie-rock to folk driven lullabies, then wrap this present up with a bow of harmonies and acoustic guitar and you got yourself a pretty solid gift. 7.5 out of 10

There is no denying that what Ariana does, she does well. There is nothing earth-shattering about this album. Generic pop fills and standard R&B samples fill Grande’s latest outing from start to finish, but I’ll be damned if you don’t find yourself nodding your head and tapping your toes. 7 out of 10

Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes

Released: January 24, 2019

Netflix drops on us this Ted Bundy documentary and after its four episodes, I found myself wanting more; but not in a good way. The content is interesting but I would have preferred a deeper and more detailed dive into this utterly insane story. If this would have been an 8 episode run with more time spent on all of the events that took place, I believe it would have left us with a more engaging plot arc to follow. With all that in mind, it’s still a decent docuseries that’s worth watching but when compared to other true-crime shows, doesn’t quite match up. 6 out of 10
